This in-depth course, sponsored by Cosy, will look at the ways in which Loris Malaguzzi (1920 – 1994) has influenced educators worldwide. Encouraging educators to become co-researchers alongside of children, learning from children about how they learn, and what it was that we could do, to amplify and generate contexts for thinking, learning and expressing in sociable ways.

In 1945, Loris Malaguzzi worked together with the women of Reggio Emilia, Italy to fight for pre-school education for their children with aims for children who could think for themselves so that fascism could never again overpower Italy. In 1991, one of the pre-schools Diana, on behalf of all the municipal pre-schools was selected by Newsweek magazine in the US, as being one of the top schools in the world.

His many ideas about the purposes of education, the image we hold of children, the 100 Languages in which children construct and express learning, and the environment that acts as the third teacher have been interconnected elements of deep interest and connection for many. The schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy are sometimes described as mirrors in which to reflect on our practice, our own pedagogy, and our own ways of developing learning and knowledge alongside children and it is this “mirroring and reflecting” that will be used in this discursive and interactive course that is designed to engage participants reflect upon the meeting points with Malaguzzi that underpin your work with young children. • The nature of learning and the conditions and relations that activate it.
  • The 100 Languages of Children that enable the construction and expression of knowledge, human-being and understanding.
