Aim

To ensure participants gain knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of honour-based violence (HBV) and equip them with the skills to support clients effectively.

Participants will be able to:

• Understand and define what honour-based violence is
• Understand the difference between Forced, False and Arranged Marriages
• Be aware of the prevalence of HBV
• Determine the difference between culture and religion
• Understand the concept and importance of ‘honour’
• Identify ways in which honour can be destroyed and the families’ motives for upholding honour
• Identify types of abuse associated with HBV
• Examine the consequences of HBV on the individual, family and community
• Know the basic rules when supporting an individual affected by or at risk of HBV
• Identify the potential indicators of HBV
• Determine risk levels for people affected by or at risk of HBV and the processes to manage that risk
• Consider the most appropriate way of supporting an individual
• Determine ways to keep an individual safe
• Be confident to deal with a disclosure
• Understand the role of other agencies as it relates to HBV
• Learn about other support services and what help, and information is available
• Consider how this learning might impact on their own work situation
