Cheryl Hadland, entrepreneur, Mum/Nana and scuba diver, started Tops Day Nurseries from scratch in 1990 after finding a lack of suitable childcare in her area, and has since grown her business to include 30+ day nurseries across the South coast, a training company and a property company, but has also run other businesses along the way including the management of 2 care homes, a scuba dive school, retail shop and secretarial services business.
Tops Day Nurseries is in its 30th year and is Dorset’s most successful nursery business, with a strong ethos in being socially responsible and environmentally sustainable. In 2017, Cheryl caught the attention of the national news by banning glitter from all Tops settings, tackling the issue of micro plastics polluting our oceans and entering our food chain. Since then Tops Day Nurseries have become textbook examples of sustainability in practice, issuing a ban on One-Use Plastic products and switching to sustainable alternatives.
Cheryl founded the Green EarlyYears Choices Champion Organisation (GECCO), a not-for-profit charity in 2017, and through GECCO Cheryl and her team aim to share the knowledge, experience and lessons learned as they strive to provide the most sustainable Early Years childcare and education in the UK, and hope to encourage other industry professionals to make the change to become more sustainable as well.
“We hope that our future generation will be more conscientious about their impact on the environment. We welcome support from parents and families, we believe this is a cultural change which will benefit not only us, but our children even more” – Cheryl Hadland, Managing Director
Cheryl also chairs the Ofsted Big Conversation SouthWest forums, heads up campaigns to Parliament for sustainable practice implementation and is a member of the Early Years Sustainable Education (EYSE) steering group.

“I completed my NVQ L3 Business & Administration with Aspire and the support and guidance I received was amazing. I have previously completed other NVQ’s with different training providers and they do not compare to the training provided by Aspire”
