I am a professional educator with a passionate belief in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) philosophy and approach.
Throughout my career I have developed and demonstrated my superb communication skills establishing and fostering productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, collaborating across all professional levels and with parents to encourage involvement in student learning. When educating young children, it is vital to incorporate parents into the learning process, and Ofsted has noted my relationship with parents as ‘exemplary,’ which is a true point of pride for me.
Working in team environments I have established a record as a supportive mentor and coach, motivating individuals and teams to achieve their professional best. My background includes multiple situations where I have had the opportunity to leverage my professional experience and training to improve practices and the overall quality of instruction.
In addition to my teaching and training roles, I have written and published children’s books focusing on inclusion, using books to support children’s personal, social, and emotional development as well as their communication and language skills.
Service has always been very important to me, and I have volunteered at the Bulembu School in Swaziland, assisting the principal with program and curriculum development. I volunteer at Epsom RDA, supporting disabled children and young adults whenever I can.
It is my goal, as a visiting author, to bring my extensive experience working with young children, my dedication to continuous improvement, and superb communication skills to helping children grow and develop.
I visit schools and settings offering reading sessions to 2-5 year olds.
I can cover a wide area within a day’s travel. I have also read to a school overseas.
Dear Ms Powell, I must say that I was very lucky that I coincidentally had some meetings planned at Pembroke Primary and managed to observe an amazing session of yours. Thank you for the opportunity and for the inspiring delivery of the story. I must say that the children were completely engaged and they were enjoying it so much. As a Literacy Support Teacher, I would like to know about any other future visits you might plan. You might want to visit other schools within the college. It was my pleasure meeting you. Thanks and regards, Sarah Agius Literacy Support Teacher

Thank you Carmen for your visit, which really enhanced our book week, with the children excited to meet a real author and enjoy listening to a new storyteller. Your animated story telling and wonderful, warm approach with the children had them all wanting to join in excitedly and listen keenly to the story. The children made lots of comments about the story and were really taken with the beautiful illustrations, taking note of the story setting. We were all so impressed with how engaged the children were, they could not wait for more and did not want to move on to other activities, instead wanting to listen to even more stories with you! Thank you again for your visit and we look forward to welcoming you back with your next book! :)
